W1: The World I Want to Live In

The world I envision is one where peace, justice and inclusion are not just ideals but a reality. It is a world where every individual is valued, where communities thrive on kindness and where systemic discrimination and inequalities are relics of the past. This vision of mine aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which promotes peaceful and inclusive societies. But what would such a world look like in practice? Let us delve deeper through its values, structures and the challenges we as a society must overcome to make it a reality.

A World Shaped by Core Values

In this ideal world, compassion, kindness and equity are the foundation of every law and social norm. The justice system focus on rehabilitation rather than harsh punishment, ensuring that everyone (regardless of background) has access to fair treatment. Schools teach empathy and conflict solution, fostering a culture of understanding from an early age.

Just imagine walking down a street where diversity is celebrated, not just tolerated. Neighbours would greet each other warmly and public spaces and infrastructure are designed to be accessible to all, reflecting a commitment to inclusion. Crime in this world is nearly nonexistent as systemic causes like poverty and discrimination have been addressed. Instead of building prisons, there are community centres offering education and mental health support to those in need.

The Feel of a Peaceful, Harmonious Society

When we close our eyes, picturing how this world appears to us:
  • The sounds we hear are of laughter, emanating from lively discussion and music from different cultures blending harmoniously together.
  • The sights and things we see are green cities with sustainable architecture, vibrant murals celebrating unity in public places and children of all backgrounds playing together happily.
  • The feel is one of safety and belonging, where nobody is afraid to walk alone at night and no one is marginalized for who they are.
Visualize a school where there is no bullying because students are taught to uplift one another. Imagine a home where every family has access to clean water and food. This is the world I'd envisioned, a world where people are not consumed by greed and prejudice.

Why This World Matters to Me

This vision of mine isn't just a utopian fantasy, but a necessity for all. Globally, issues like war, discrimination and inequality caused immense suffering to those who are affected. I've seen how wars destroyed the lives of people, causing them grief and pain while the actual people that started it is living indifferently, with the expense of the common folks. A just world would mean no child grows up in fear, no family is torn apart by war, and no one is denied their rights because of their identity.

The Challenges Faced

Envisioning a perfect world is easy. However, reality is often not too simple like that. So, what is stopping us from achieving this?

  • Power imbalances: There are always people in power that prioritize control and personal gain over equity.
  • Fear of change: Many people resist inclusive policies due to some ingrained biases.
  • Resource inequality: Wealth and opportunities are hoarded by a few, leaving others struggling and scarping by.
Overcoming these barriers requires collective action like voting for leaders who prioritize justice, supporting grassroots movements and holding institutions accountable.

In a nutshell, the world I want to live in is within reach if we choose to build it. Starting with small acts like opposing injustice, practicing kindness and loving one another. By aligning our actions with the values of SDG 16, a future where peace, justice and inclusion are not just dreams but the pillars of society.
